HIWPP's goals are to improve the US’s medium-range global weather forecasts. An important part of this process is to engage with the public, private and academic sectors in the development of new and improved, experimental global modeling systems. Engaging this group of informed users in the model development process is anticipated to lead to a more robust and effective product development cycle.
For some time, the weather enterprise has sought to better engage in the development of weather models. For a good and particularly relevant example of this kind of ongoing effort, see the AMS Forecast Improvement Group’s (FIG) Summary of Recommendations. Especially relevant for HIWPP are recommendations 1, 2, 4, and 7.
To this end, HIWPP will provide access to global model output in real-time research mode, and to enhanced tools to analyze, evaluate, and visualize these data. Additional information will be available to interested users beginning fall 2014.
If you would like additional information as it becomes available, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, affiliation, and email address. A mailing list is being created and will be used to disseminate new information, updates, and announcements.
